SPECIALIZING IN CHALLENGING BEHAVIOR
JOYFUL WAYS
SPECIALIZING IN CHALLENGIN BEHAVIOR
Challenging behavior is one that is culturally abnormal, and puts the person or their environment at risk, due to its power or frequency.
Research acknowledges many kinds of challenging behaviors as well as the reasons and circumstances that lead a person to form various challenging behaviors, including medical reasons, emotional issues, communication issues, sensory issues, unadjusted social interactions etc.
In Amit, we choose to refer to challenging behavior as a form of poor communication, in need of replacement / reforming. The resident uses their behavior to signify something to us, and our job is to learn their challenging language and teach them new ways to express themselves.
TREATMENT OF CHALLENGING BEHAVIOR
When a person is joyful, they are open to learn and progress.
Amit staff is composed of professionals of various fields, including education, therapy, medicine, alternative medicine, art and more, and all of them form their work based on this idea. Joy is our way of life, so in seeking how to deal with any challenging behavior, we always start out with “joy”.
The corner stones of our methods are positive reinforcement and reward giving. We develop them using methods of behavior analysis, movement pattern analysis, by tracking the way the resident relaxes out of the behavior, and by finding ways to reduce the stress before the escalation. All with joy and friendship.
Because Amit means friend.
PROGRESS
PROGRESS ON THE SPECTRUM OF LIFE
Life is progression – from a state of existential dependence on the environment (infancy), through increasing levels of independence and social acclimation (adolescence), towards a state of mindful reciprocity with society (adulthood), eventually completing the circle and depending again on the environment (elderliness). Amit boarding house supplies its residents the opportunity they deserve to experience this line of progression. We exchange the term “independence” with “supported independence”, providing the space needed for the residents’ ability to develop and shine.
THE ISRAELI LIFE-TRAJECTORY, AND THE RELATIONSHIP WITH SOCIETY
Kindergarten, elementary school, high school, military, long-term trip, university, work, family, mortgage, worries, pleasures, pension… we all know the typical Israeli life-trajectory.
The trajectory experienced in Amit draws from the positive aspects of it.
When constructing each resident’s personal program, based on their ability and will, we always aspire to bring them closer to the Israeli life-trajectory. We promote this matter by cooperating with the outside community on many projects: Volunteer work, youth movements, youth sports and culture centers, employment programs and even projects with the IDF and the police.
DIFFERENT HOMES ON THE PROGRESS OF LIFE
Amit boarding house includes houses of varying physical, social and therapeutic characteristics, so that our residents get a chance to experience “moving” as a part of their progress and according to the needs which change with age. Each house gets a different level of support according to the residents’ level of independence. Some houses are used as training units towards moving to the next home, and some are houses which change and “grow up” with their occupants.
Different homes for different residents, different homes on the spectrum.
Different homes with one common trait: they grow and develop for their residents.
With joy.
Because Amit means friend, a lifelong friend.
